Lighting is an essential aspect for any home that emanates warmth and comfort. It’s an undeniable fact that the basic functions of light fixture anywhere are to illuminate the section of area enabling us to walk around safely. In the case of homes, apart from brilliant lighting, light fixtures contribute to the aesthetics of the home. Before the nitty-gritty is delved in to, an elucidation on the basics is not only important but also in many ways “illuminating”.
A luminaire is basically any device that comprises a lamp holder and the medium of electrification and for that device. Lighting fixtures come under the purview of luminaires, which are fixed or attached to a building, in a relatively permanent manner. Therefore, a table lamp is a definitely a luminaire but not a fixture. There are many different luminaires. Strictly speaking of a pendant light, most of them are categorized as diffuse luminaires. This is because they emit a broad light without shield that creates a glare. When they are used as a standalone fixture, the light emitted from them is often uncomfortable. Their main purpose is to serve as light emitting ornamental fixtures. There are few wall sconces that emit light upwards, where the light bounces back from the ceiling. This is why at times sconces are categorized as indirect luminaries too. With regards to decorative fixtures, pendants just like chandeliers are hung from the ceiling. They are fewer formals than chandeliers but are constituent of the group of hanging luminaries. Incandescent lamps are mostly used for pendant lighting. They are used for both light and their decorative value. Depending on the desire for sparkle or simply and eye level illumination, the Pendant Lighting could be translucent or opaque, respectively. We, humans, have understood that besides natural light, we need additional light sources, not only to function but also to make a statement through our choices of light fixtures. Ultimately, our choices speak volumes about our aspirations, dislikes, and indifference. Conveying the aforesaid by combining the aesthetics of the interior architecture with a select choice of luminaires is simply an elaborate and an enlightened way of saying “I AM WHAT I AM”. : )
